For over 50 years, WAMOW has been ensuring seniors in our community receive freshly prepared, nutritious meals when they need it most. All of our meals are strictly low-sodium, are balanced for the specific health needs of seniors, and are prepared under the direction of Huggins Hospital's Food and Nutrition Service Department.
WAMOW’s primary goal is to provide a nutritious meal and social contact Monday through Friday to residents of Brookfield, Tuftonboro, and Wolfeboro who are unable to secure and prepare food because of illness, convalescence or incapacitation with a cognitive, physical, or psychological impairment. Recipients may be elderly, disabled, convalescing or experiencing malnutrition. Most participants are homebound. The service is available to people of all income levels and age groups, either on a temporary or long-term basis. WAMOW provides service to eligible applicants without regard to race, color, religion, gender, age, national origin, handicap or political affiliation.
Our meals include a freshly prepared entrée with one protein (4-6 ounces) accompanied by two vegetable sides. A snack or dessert accompanies each meal, and a single serving of low fat milk is an option three days per week. The menu offers two protein choices and up to four vegetable options from which our participants may choose. The menu rotates every four weeks, and changes twice per year.
Deliveries are made Monday through Friday. Meals depart the Huggins kitchen by 10:30 am, and reach their destination by lunchtime. We do not deliver on Saturday or Sundays, or on major holidays (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, or Christmas Day). Participants may choose from one of three delivery schedules:
Five days per week (Monday through Friday);
Three days per week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday);
Two day schedule (Tuesday, Thursday)
For the isolated elderly in rural areas, the arrival of the WAMOW volunteer driver means someone to exchange pleasantries and to check on their well-being during the daytime hours. This one on one exchange with a dedicated and concerned volunteer may be the only contact that person has on a day to day basis and can be critically important to their sense of safety and well-being.
The program also serves as a link and reassurance for caregivers who do not live locally and are concerned about the welfare of their family member (or members) who is often a parent. It is frequently the goal of the family to help an individual live independently for as long as that can be accomplished, and they recognize the role that WAMOW can play in this effort. There are times when a parent is reluctant to accept the Meals on Wheels concept and it is then that family members can point out that by having this service the parents are in fact retaining control and that choosing WAMOW is just one more way to stay independent.
